The Sergeant sat consumed with interest but not really listening, a passionate yet detached audience. The stories fulfilled a need in him, but it was neither the words nor their meaning which held him, it was the voice. It was, quite simply, the most incredible voice he had ever heard. It was rich, astonishingly rich, etched with a wealth of years but as smooth as velvet. It boomed without being loud and somehow gave the impression of coming not just from deep within him, but also, inexplicably, from far away. And as the old man talked, its strength became obvious and it carried effortlessly in to every corner of the carriage where it rocked gently like a lullaby in time with the swaying of the train. It was a voice of kindness and warmth and wisdom as ancient as the seas, and it washed over him like a balm.
